New Delhi:The Congress and the Left parties intensified their demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the staged shootouts in Gujarat after the state government Monday admitted that the wife of an innocent Muslim killed as terrorist was also murdered.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), which along with three other Left parties extends crucial support to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government, even criticised Home Minister Shivraj Patil for remaining silent over the police killings.

Declining army share in budget worries parliamentary panel

New Delhi: Expressing its “concern” over the Indian Army’s “declining” share in the defence budget, a parliamentary panel has called for measures to correct this so that modernisation does not suffer.
“The committee noted with concern the declining trend in the share of the army in the defence budget (from) 57 percent in 2002-03 (to) 47 percent in the current year,” parliament’s standing committee on defence said in its 16th report tabled in the Lok Sabha Saturday. The report was made public Monday.

Manmohan Singh’s Rajya Sabha term ends on June 14

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s term as member of parliament ends June 14. But it seems certain that he will be re-elected for a fourth term from Assam when the biennial elections are held May 24.
Manmohan Singh is one of the two Rajya Sabha MPs from Assam whose terms expire June 14. The other member is Indramoni Bora.
